Working with GeoDrill

What you can expect working with the leaders in the field

Our Process

The process from initial enquiry to project award is managed by the dedicated Geodrill team where each project is considered on its own merit. We conduct thorough pre-tender site visits to define the scope of works, estimate material costs, and plan rig and crew availability all of which we consider crucial steps to delivering a cost effective renewable energy project.

1. Enquiry

After receiving your initial phone call or email enquiry, our team promptly initiates the process. We thoroughly review the tender documents and conduct a comprehensive local geology search. Within just a few days a preliminary estimated quote will be provided in writing.

2. Mobilisation

Our drill rig and equipment will arrive on two 40ft low loader wagons coordinating with the client to ensure compliance with traffic management plans. Site-specific challenges like access restrictions or time constraints can be dealt with by downsizing transport deliveries and micro-managing as needed.

3. Drilling

We pride ourselves on efficiency so when we arrive, we get to work right away, starting the drilling process on the same day. We coordinate the setup and drilling schedule with our clients, considering site activities and the schedules of other contractors. The timeline for drilling can vary, depending on the number and depth of boreholes and the geological conditions on site.

4. Installation

After completing the borehole, our expert team installs the geothermal loop system with in-situ grouting. These ground source loops come in various sizes (32, 40, 45, and 50mm) and can be installed at depths exceeding 300m. We prioritise quality materials and industry best practices to guarantee the durability and efficiency of your geothermal system.

5. Testing & Quality Control

Once the geothermal loop installation is completed, our rigorous quality control procedures come into play which includes flow and pressure testing. We conduct thorough assessments to verify the system's integrity, efficiency, and longevity, ensuring it meets our high standards and your expectations.

6. Customer Care

Repeat business is our core business. As a GeoDrill customer past or present, we will always be there for you.

Some frequently asked questions

How deep is a Geothermal borehole?
The depth of the borehole is typically 150-200m deep but this is determined during the preliminary design study and any subsequent test hole drilling.
What is the maximum depth you can go to?
We are currently drilling geothermal boreholes at depths of up to 400m.
What diameter will the hole be?
The hole is drilled typically at approx 5” diameter.
How long does it take to drill a hole?
1-2 days per borehole depending on geological conditions found, the depth, the site conditions and water supply available.
What is the size of the drilling rig?
The drilling rigs range from 9 - 12 tonnes with a footprint of approx. 7.5m x 2.5m
How much space does the drilling operation take up?
The operating footprint of the rig is approx 12m x 2.5m but a separate agreed area will be required for the mud recycling unit, mud pump other additional equipment to suit the specific site.
Will there be any mess during the works/How much mess will it make?
Mess will be kept to a minimum by using a modern mud recycling unit within a controlled sealed system.
Does the drilling operation cause a lot of noise?
Noise occurs during drilling operations but we can use control measures to limit its nuisance on a site by site basis.
How much does a geothermal well cost?
Each borehole is different and therefore there is no set price for a borehole or boreholes. Upon request however, we will be able to provide you with a quote for your requirements which will depend on various factors including number and depth of boreholes, site location, geology and water supply.
